Summary: The movie is framed as a memory told by a man named Francis. He recalls the arrival of the mysterious Dr. Caligari at a local fair, who exhibits Cesare, a sleepwalker kept in a cabinet. When Francis's friend asks Cesare how long he has to live, the sleepwalker predicts his death before dawn, and that night, the friend is murdered. Francis investigates, tracking the killings back to Caligari, whom he discovers is actually the director of the local insane asylum, driven mad by an obsession with an 18th century mystic. Then, the narrative snaps back to reality, revealing that Francis is actually an inmate at the asylum. His fiancée Jane and the sleepwalker Cesare are merely fellow patients, and the "monstrous" Dr. Caligari is the benevolent director of the hospital. Francis's entire investigation was a delusion, and the movie ends with the director realizing the nature of his patient's paranoia and preparing a cure.
